This castle is one of the oldest in Slovakia.  Devin, a borough of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is situated at the confluence of Danube and Morava close to the Austrian border. Early finds date to the Neolithic age.  Celts and Romans have left their mark on the Slovak country-side.  The castle is closely related to these historic times.  A reef of 212 meters was an ideal place for the construction of a fortress.  Important trade routes, including part of the amber route, could be controlled from this point. During the Great Moravian period, Devin developed into the center of a larger agglomeration.  First written sources date to 864.  A fortified castle was constructed in the 13th century to protect the Western border of Hungary. In the 20th century parts of the castle were reconstructed.  Wide open courtyards, palace walls, staircases, a 60 m deep castle well and other residential and functional buildings. Steve
